Join the Edmond Jazz Orchestra as they perform the pivotal compositions that defined the Cool Era of Jazz. During the 1940s, the  Claude Thornhill Orchestra, primarily a dance band, served as fertile ground for a new style of jazz composition incorporating elements of European impressionism and cutting-edge American Bebop. This led to the famous collaborations with Miles Davis including Birth of the Cool, Miles Ahead, Porgy and Bess, and Sketches of Spain. The EJO lead by Zac Lee, professor of Jazz Arranging and Composition, and Vince Norman, current graduate student, will feature original transcriptions and arrangements of the Gil Evans and Claude Thornhill Orchestras. Join us for the rare opportunity to experience this classic Big Band music in a live setting.
The Edmond Jazz Orchestra (EJO) is a traditional 20 piece Big Band comprised primarily of UCO graduates, professors, and students. The band has performed with numerous headliners including Bill Watrous, Dan Miller, and Phil Woods. From the traditional Big Band music of the 1930s and 40s to the Avant-Guard compositions of today, the EJO strives to accurately represent the music practices of the past, present, and future of Jazz Music.
